Dreamy Jackal
Location: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa
Black Backed Jackals (Canis mesomelas) are some of the most misunderstood animals in Africa. For many years farmers have shot them indiscrimintly without giving any thought as to the role they play in an ecosystem and how the human-animal interaction actually benefits both parties. For quite some time I have been wanting to create an image showing the softer, more gentle side of these small scavengers. During a visit to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, an area with a high density of these animals a soft, overcast light and a pose that showed a nervous vulnerability finally came together and I got the shot I was looking for.
